"Naturally, the guys that are for me and the women that are for me, they say 'Way to go, Don, ' and the people that are against me, they took it the way they wanted to take it", Cherry added.

Later on Monday, Cherry responded to his sacking. By the afternoon, word spread that he had been fired.

"Sports brings people together - it unites us, not divides us", president of Sportsnet Bart Yabsley said in a statement. He has been known to favor English-speaking, Canadian-born hockey players over those from Europe or Quebec, whom he considers soft, and has spoken out about Canada's lack of support for the USA -led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and his disbelief in the existence of climate change.

Don Cherry was sacked because of the "divisive remarks" he made during a break in a National Hockey League game on Saturday.

Don Cherry of Hockey Night in Canada attends the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic Alumni Game between the Edmonton Oilers alumni and the Winnipeg Jets alumni at Investors Group Field on October 22, 2016 in Winnipeg, Canada.

When asked if his stubborn refusal to change with the times led to his ultimate demise on Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry wouldn't budge.

Cherry has occasionally attracted controversy for deriding Europeans, French-Canadians and people who ride bicycles.

Cherry himself refused to apologize for his comments when reached by the Toronto Sun.

Ms Cooper said the USA military was concerned that denying U.S. assistance would make it harder for Kiev to negotiate with Moscow. Mr Trump argued on Twitter over the weekend that he was not guilty of misconduct and that the probe was politically driven.

Cherry, 85, singled out new immigrants in Toronto and Mississauga, Ont., where he lives, for not honouring Canada's veterans and dead soldiers.

"The only thing I can say about that is I'm disappointed", Cherry said.

Budweiser, the sponsor of "Coach's Corner", put out a statement condemning Cherry's comments after Sportsnet's decision.

Coach Travis Green also described Cherry's comments as unacceptable. We're all as Canadian as the next.

Dhillon spoke to several media outlets regarding his disappointment over Cherry's comments but wasn't among those calling for Sportsnet to remove him. "We have spoken with Don about the severity of this issue and we sincerely apologize for these divisive remarks".

"The opinions he expressed are in direct conflict with the values of diversity and inclusion that we embrace as pillars of our sport", read the statement in part.

"So, I owe you an apology, too".

"To keep my job, I can not be turned into a tamed robot", he said. Cherry claimed that no more than sufficient of them put on poppies to commemorate Remembrance Working day. The former coach of the Boston Bruins and Colorado Rockies was hired in 1981 as a commentator for CBC's "Hockey Night In Canada".
