Jimmy Carter Admitted To Emory For Brain Procedure After Recent Falls

Former President Jimmy Carter seen here earlier this month in Georgia was hospitalized Monday

Former President Jimmy Carter was admitted to the hospital Monday night for a procedure, the Carter Center announced.

A spokesperson for the family said he was "resting comfortably, and his wife, Rosalynn, is with him".

Carter, the oldest living ex-U.S. president, was admitted to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta on Monday evening ahead of the procedure, which is scheduled to take place Tuesday morning.

In the past, Carter has fought health battles, including a bout of cancer in 2015.

Carter's most recent fall was about three weeks ago at his home in Plains, Ga.

Last week the former Democratic president also visited Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia to teach Sunday school, where he talked about how he came to peace with the notion of death as he battled cancer.

The 39th president has survived a dire cancer diagnosis in 2015 and surpassed George H.W. Bush as the longest-lived USA president in history this spring.

It was unclear how long Carter might be hospitalized, said his pastor, the Rev.

Carter said earlier this year he hoped "there's an age limit" to holding the highest elected office in the United States.

"We just need the whole country to be in prayer for him", Lowden told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The church confirmed Carter will not be teaching his Sunday school class this week.

Despite his injuries, Carter made his way to Nashville on October 7 with a bandage above his left eye and a large, red welt below it.

Since then, Carter said he's been "absolutely confident" in the Christian idea of life after death, and hasn't anxious about his own death.
