Michael Bloomberg files to run in Alabama primary

NEW YORK NEW YORK- OCTOBER 17 Honoree Michael Bloomberg speaks onstage during the Hudson River Park Annual Gala at Cipriani South Street

The Alabama primary is on Super Tuesday on March 3. It's a strategy that acknowledges the limitations of entering the race at this late stage and the opportunities afforded by the billionaire's vast personal wealth. Other candidates in the crowded field have spent months courting voters there and building campaign operations.

Michael Bloomberg is taking new steps toward running for president in 2020.

If reports are to be believed, Michael Bloomberg is on the verge of entering the 2020 Democratic primary, where he will join Tom Steyer, a fellow billionaire activist and would-be technocratic politician.

Bloomberg has long flirted with launching a presidential campaign but has never gone so far as to register to appear on the ballot.

The 77-year-old politician will run against current Democratic candidates with a capitalist mindset and $50 billion net worth, FOX Business' Stuart Varney said.

Advisers to Mr Bloomberg said he would likely make up his mind about the race within days, rather than weeks.

Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor who is one of the country's richest men, has his own vulnerabilities, such as his support for stop-and-frisk policing and charter schools, and his criticism of Warren in particular over her positions on progressive taxation and trillions of dollars in new spending, which are popular on the left.

"He is in", Mr Vilsack said of Mr Bloomberg's message.

In a follow-up email, Vilsack told the AP that Bloomberg said in the message that "it was true he is running".

Vilsack was the US secretary of agriculture under President Barack Obama. Fifteen states and American Samoa vote in the March 3 contests, with almost a quarter of primary delegates up for grabs.

Wenger to discuss return to management with Munich
The German champions are looking for a new manager after they sacked Niko Kovac on Sunday, following a 5-1 defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt .

Bill Carrick, a veteran Democratic strategist based in Los Angeles, said he doesn't think skipping the early voting states is ever a viable strategy.

Former New York City Mayor and possible 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg speaks at the Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, US, January 29, 2019.

"I have no, no problem with him getting in the race", Biden said.

According to the former mayor's spokesperson, Howard Wolfson, Bloomberg's principal concern is that the current field of Democratic presidential hopefuls isn't strong enough to defeat Donald Trump, which apparently led Bloomberg to reconsider his decision.

Biden described Bloomberg as "an honorable guy" and added that Bloomberg has "put a lot of money behind causes I care a lot about".

He will face close scrutiny of his three-year term as New York City mayor. "But there is zero evidence that rank-and-file voters in the early states of Iowa and New Hampshire feel the same".

Bloomberg, a Republican-turned-independent who registered as a Democrat past year, has flirted with a presidential run before but ultimately backed down, including in 2016. Axios wrote that Bloomberg "increasingly became concerned that all the leading Democrats have weaknesses Trump could exploit in the general election".

Bloomberg reached out to several prominent Democrats on Thursday, including Raimondo.

He initially decided last winter that he would not challenge Trump in 2020, in large part because he concluded he could not win the Democratic nomination with Biden in the race, as a formidable standard-bearer for the party's moderate wing. But he is expected to file to get on the ballot in Alabama's presidential primary.
