Google May Change Political Ad Policy

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey accompanied by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee in Washington

With the latest row, the tech giants have come under the scanner yet again after being flagged for violating privacy laws.

"From a business perspective, a very small percent of our business that is made from political ads does not come close to justifying the controversy this incurs for our company", said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The discussion comes as Twitter issued an outright ban on political ads on its platform at the same time Facebook was scrutinized for the decision not to fact-check similar advertisements.

Also, the upcoming United Kingdom general election will be among the first events to take place since Twitter's new policy of restricting political advertisements that are paid, a ban that will take effect from November 22 and in response to this, Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, said that political messages are something that needs to earned and not bought.

Google is looking to change its political ad policy ahead of the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The startling claim sent shockwaves and even forced companies like Facebook and Google to rethink its policies. Among other measures, the employees say the company should prohibit political campaigns from using microtargeting techniques.

The 22-year-old United forward linked up with Anthony Martial in the 66th minute and saw his drilled effort hit the crossbar and land in the back of the net.

According to reports, Facebook has the biggest social media influence in the United Kingdom with a base of 42 million users and also it has been subject to intense criticism for having a role in spreading wrong information ahead of the 2016 Brexit vote.

Russia's involvement in the US Presidential election, which largely hampered the then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's chances to win, once again proved the frailty of social media, internet and technology to safeguard one's privacy.

Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) and Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Google are considering changing policies on political ads, weighing the costs of being in the middle of the debate over truth in political speech against the multibillion-dollar election-year opportunity. The California-based company said that it is considering changes to how political ads can be targeted and providing more information about who is paying for an ad.

Though there is no clarity of what the changes could be at this point, a Google spokesperson told the website that the company's advertising policies are uniform across Search and YouTube. It's not clear if those plans would see Google rule out campaign ads altogether, as Twitter did, or limit them in some way, such as restricting the ability to target specific audiences. The advert additionally ran on Twitter and Google's YouTube.
