Emilia Clarke believes new film Last Christmas is anti-Brexit

Last Christmas: Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is 'BLOODY' annoyed with fans; Here's Why

Having not seen any of her work in the HBO series, I'm not all that familiar with the buzz on the lady. Kate has missed five doctor's appointments and now refuses to see her family. Christmas movies aren't just a guilty pleasure anymore, they're a bona fide booming mini-industry. Since this is more or less a Christmas movie, and I hate Christmas movies, I nearly skipped the screening.

The duo is aptly supported by Michelle Yeoh as Kate's stressed-out employer, Emma Thompson as Kate's over reactive mom, Boris Isakovic as Kate's Dad, and Lydia Leonard as Kate's sister Martha. It's owned by a lady who goes by the name of Santa.

Clarke stars as Kate, a refugee from the former Yugoslavia who was brought to England by her parents when she was young. Her life is a mess and spiraling out of control as she surfs from one friend's couch to another. If either can be avoided, that's flawless.

Kate and Tom are slightly maddening in their extreme quirks for the first half of the film. She doesn't want to go back to live with her parents but finally has to.

They and the other co-stars are superb but it doesn't matter who they cast in those roles. It's all wrapped up in a message of doing better, taking care of each other and living this one life we're given to its fullest. She has her own budding romance that is weird and quirky and heartwarming instead of creepy, which is entirely because of Yeoh's own spunk. That said, it's a Christmas movie and Christmas movies do that. It has the potential to be one we still turn to ten Christmases from now. It's a few days past Halloween and not even Thanksgiving, and here comes a Christmas movie.

Impressive Naoya Inoue enhances reputation with points win over Nonito Donaire
That changed in the 11th when Inoue landed a vicious left hook to the body to force Donaire to take a knee. By the end of the seventh round, the marks began to show on Donaire's face as his right eye was swelling.

LAST CHRISTMAS winds up being simply okay. Thompson, of course, is already an integral part of one Yuletide perennial, "Love Actually", so it's natural to come to "Last Christmas" seeking some of the same spirit.

Christmas in London is gorgeous, and nearly irresistible. They love anything associated with the holiday and are especially fond of the zillion Christmas movies shown on the Hallmark Channel.

The rest of the film's meandering script, penned by Thompson and Bryony Kimmings and seemingly directed on autopilot by a usually skillful Feig, quickly becomes mired in corny cliches and glossy, surface-level sentiment, creating more of an assemblage of tropes than a story. Why would people watch a trailer for a Christmas movie and suddenly think it's The Matrix or something? "I'm not going to heal my heart and then give it to someone who'd going to break it", Kate threatens. One particular film, Last Christmas, helmed by Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has all the makings of the flawless sparkly Christmas flick.

But wait. He also did the redo of "Ghostbusters" and "Spy". If only it had leaned more into the acerbic appeal of Clarke's performance or made the effort to scaffold a believable central relationship, "Last Christmas" might have had a shot at some meaningful originality. If you've been paying just a smidge of attention thus far in the film, you'll see the big twist as one big eye-roll of a reveal. The 50 that's good is really, really good. While no critic is a fan of the movies obvious twist, there's no denying the talent of the star-studded cast and the power of Emma Thompsons screenwriting abilities. It's playing at the Fairchild Cinemas Pasco and Queensgate 12s, at the AMC Classic Kennewick 12 and at Walla Walla Grand Cinemas.
