Australia battles bushfires, prepares for ‘catastrophic’ conditions

Firefighters have worked through the night battling the bushfire emergency

Firefighters are desperately trying to control devastating bushfires across NSW before a "danger day" of weather forecast for Tuesday forcing the Rural Fire Service to issue this dire warning "lives will be at risk".

Emergency services said they had found the remains of one person in a vehicle and another woman died despite medics struggling for several hours to save her.

The fires cut a ferocious path through iSouth Taree. "She was also unconscious and the crews were rendering first aid and CPR for several hours".

One of the fires in Crowdy Bay National Park, north of Taree has already burned through nearly 12,000 hectares, while the other at Mount Nardi National Park is 2200 hectares in size and out-of-control.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed a second fatality as she addressed reporters in Sydney. She was in an absolute panic.

She warned the number could rise, and said the community must brace itself for worse to come.

"There is no rain, there is no forecast of rain, there is no prospect of any meaningful rain so we could be in this fight now for a number of weeks".

Officials also said more than 150 homes have been destroyed.

The current disaster has not wreaked the human devastation of Australia's worst recent bushfires, the Black Saturday fires that killed 173 people in Victoria state in 2009, with some experts attributing that to better early warning systems.

Emergency Services Minister David Elliott tells Alan Jones people must start preparing now.

"Tuesday 12 November will be a unsafe day", it tweeted.

"I would call on all our employers, particularly our volunteers whether they're in the Rural Fire Service, the emergency services or indeed our retained firefighters that rely on the generosity of their employers to give them time away from work".

Unprecedented bushfires in NSW have claimed the lives of two people, amid fears there could be more fatalities as blazes rage across the state's north and mid-north regions.

Thousands of residents have been evacuated in Queensland. "Firefighters are unable to prevent the fire advancing".

More than 60 fires continued to burn on Sunday night. "Some are creating their own weather conditions and pyrocumulous clouds are developing", the NSW RFS said.

Within a week, homes were lost as fires tore into communities across the state with northern NSW near Tenterfield among the worst-hit.

He added that usually spot fires - caused by embers flying ahead of a fire front - would be 4km ahead but yesterday they were flying ahead by between six and 12km.

Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said students sitting their HSC should contact their school if unsure if exams will occur, or if it is unsafe for them to get to an examination venue.

Authorities said they were concerned about the severity of the fires ahead of its hottest months, a year after the nation experienced its warmest summer on record.

Fire bans will stay in place across parts of the state, with conditions to be "mostly severe" on Monday, the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services told 10 daily.
