Democratic wins and what they mean for Trump: key election takeaways

Ahead of the election, Republicans attempted to paint Beshear and fellow Democrats as "socialists", and Gov. Bevin claimed his opponent was "in line with Bernie Sanders" and "spreading his hateful class warfare and communist ideology". Meanwhile, in Virginia, the Democrats also show a total control in the government.

On Tuesday voters in a handful of states once again headed to the polls - and the message they delivered was one that again should be of concern to Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Here are a few takeaways from a night of balloting just under a year from the 2020 national election. "As has been reported, a recanvassing has never changed the result of a Kentucky election".

"We've had close elections".

During Trump's first term as president, he has endorsed multiple candidates who have won elections, and others who have lost their elections. The businessman ran as a political outsider, losing to now-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in the 2014 Senate primary and winning the governorship a year later.

Despite sinking popularity in opinion polls, he contended that he would win a comfortable re-election.

The hotly contested governor's race in Kentucky was too close to call Tuesday night, with Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear holding a narrow lead - and declaring victory - over Republican Gov. Matt Bevin.

Democrat Andy Beshear claimed victory in Kentucky's governor vote, after a tight race in the conservative-leaning state.

Gap CEO Art Peck to step down amid falling sales
In August, its Banana Republic division, following other clothing competitors, began launching an online subscription service. Robert Fisher, Gap's non-executive chairman of the board, will take Peck's place until a permanent CEO is named.

"I'm on the one hand saying it's reasonable for Governor Bevin and the Republicans to call for this check but, at the same time, I'm saying the chance they'll be happy with this outcome is pretty low because the system is pretty reliable", said Voss. That's why I thought those suburbs of Cincinnati just jumped out at me, because you can think of places like that in a lot of different.

The president wasn't wrong. And while anger toward Trump isn't the only reason Bevin went down in flames, turnout in some of the most progressive areas of the state soared on Tuesday, suggesting that voters fed up with a president on the verge of impeachment and a Republican Party deadset on implementing a craven anti-worker agenda fueled Beshear's victory.

And, while the president is wildly popular in the state, surveys pegged Bevin as the least popular governor in the country.

Those new Democratic majorities could lead to greater gun control measures, further expansions to Medicaid and a shot at becoming the final state needed to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Democrats have won every statewide contest, picked up three additional congressional seats and now are set to control both the state house and the Executive Mansion for the first time since 1994. 'Talk about Kentucky when an actual Democrat runs'.

In other words, Virginia - which was once comfortably Republican and recently had been considered a swing state - is solidly Democratic blue.

Earlier this year, the state's governor was mired in a scandal over a photograph of a person in blackface in his medical school yearbook, prompting concerns among Democrats that it would take a toll on their electoral prospects.

"I'm here to officially declare today, November 5, 2019, that Virginia is officially blue", Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam told a crowd of supporters in Richmond.
