Cyclone Bulbul: Operations at Kolkata airport suspended for 12 hours

Authorities in BangladeshSo far they have evacuated some 100,000 people from their low-lying coastal towns and islands, according to officials, while the country is preparing for the arrival of Cyclone Bulbul.

A special bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the cyclone is expected to make landfall in the evening hours of Saturday.

In view of cyclonic storm Bulbul, the West Bengal Government has shifted more than one lakh 43 thousand people in low lying areas of coastal and adjoining districts.

The weather office said coastal districts were likely to be inundated by storm surges of 1 1/2-2 metres (5-7 feet) above normal tide because of the impact of the cyclone.

The authorities in Bangladesh have ordered the evacuation of some 100,000 people from coastal areas as Cyclone Bulbul is set to hit the country.

The cyclone is expected to hit the Bangladesh coast at around 8 pm (1400 GMT), disaster management secretary Shah Kamal told AFP, adding there are plans to evacuate some 1.5 million people before that.

Several ships from Bangladesh's navy and coast guard were kept ready in parts of the region for an emergency response, the TV station Independent reported.

"We are trying to achieve zero casaulty", Dash said.

Kolkata: Heavy rain triggered by very severe cyclonic storm "Bulbul" on Saturday lashed coastal West Bengal, uprooted trees leading to the death of one person in the city and causing traffic snarls, officials said.

In 1999, a super-cyclone battered the coast of India's Odisha state for 30 hours, killing 10,000 people.

India also ordered an alert on its side of the border and the West Bengal government evacuated almost 60,000 people in the state, officials said. The region has the world's largest mangrove forest, the Sundarbans.

Early cyclone warning systems have improved, giving authorities more time to evacuate people.

In May this year, Fani became the most powerful storm to hit the country in five years, but just over a dozen people were killed.
