Emmanuel Macron: we are witnessing NATO's brain death

French President Emmanuel Macron meets French and German business leaders in Shanghai

"NATO remains the cornerstone of our security", Merkel said at a news conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in Berlin.

Mr Trump's trade tariffs against the EU also have rankled European members of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, while his decision to pull the U.S. out of the 2015 Paris Agreement - which aims to limit global warming by 1.5 degrees Celsius - particularly annoyed Mr Macron, who has promised to "make the planet great again".

Europe, meanwhile, Macron argued, stands on "the edge of a precipice", and will "no longer be in control of our destiny", unless it starts behaving like a geopolitical power. "So as soon as you have a member who feels they have a right to head off on their own, granted by the United States of America, they do it", Macron said.

French President Emmanuel Macron told The Economist, a weekly, that the lack of U.S. leadership is, as he put it, the death of NATO's brain.

In his interview, he also said the United States was showing signs of "turning its back on us", as demonstrated by Trump's sudden decision last month to pull troops out of northeastern Syria without consulting the allies, the French leader said.

In the interview, Mr Macron decried a lack of coordination between Europe and the United States and lamented recent unilateral action in Syria by Turkey, a key member of the 70-year-old military alliance.

Stoltenberg said any attempt to distance Europe from North America "risks not only to weaken the Alliance, the transatlantic bond but also to divide Europe".

Macron's questioning of Nato's effectiveness and suggestion that European countries in the 29-member alliance should reassess their situation come ahead of a key summit with leaders including Donald Trump in Britain early next month.

Stocks move higher in Toronto as financials, industrials and materials rise
Over time, increased hiring tends to fuel consumer spending, which, in turn, could help lift corporate earnings and share prices. Yields moved in the price direction while higher yields allowed banks to charge interest rates on loans that are more lucrative.

But German Chancellor Angela Merkel defended the 70-year-old military alliance as "indispensable" and said Mr Macron's "sweeping judgements" were not "necessary".

"Will he", Macron asked of Trump, "be prepared to activate solidarity?"

Europe shouldn't make the "huge mistake" of avoiding dialogue with Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron told The Economist, continuing his recent overtures to the country that the West has shunned over its annexation of Crimea.

In one sign of ongoing cooperation, the U.S. Air Force flew B-52 bombers from the U.S. mainland to train with British and Norwegian allies for nearly a month in October at a time when China and Russian Federation continue to modernize their militaries.

Mr Stoltenberg said he welcomed efforts to strengthen European defence, "but European unity can not replace transatlantic unity".

"Nato is and will remain the anchor of European security".

US Secretary of Order Mike Pompeo, talking accurate thru a discuss over with to the German metropolis of Leipzig as portion of anniversary events for the tumble of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago, also disregarded Macron's remarks.
