Big Island Man Falls to Death in his Yard

Elderly Man Found Dead After Falling Into Underground Lava Tube In Hawaii

The unnamed man, who lives in the town of Hilo on Hawaii's Big Island, was trimming branches near his home when the tragic accident occurred, Big Island Now reported.

An elderly man in Hawaii apparently fell to his death on Monday after he tumbled more than 20 feet into a lava tube in his own yard.

Hawaii Fire Department Rescue personnel repelled into the lava tube to recover the body of the victim, which was about 22 feet below the surface.

Unfortunately, the property in question was built on top of a series of lava tube tunnels.

Mr Nishimoto was taken to the Hilo Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

An autopsy conducted on Tuesday determined that the man died as a result of 'injuries consistent with falling'. Authorities do not suspect any foul play in the case but said they will continue to investigate the case. Tubes can form either by the crusting over of lava channels, or from what's known as pāhoehoe flows, which is where the lava is moving beneath the surface.

The police statement also said that the victim's identity is being withheld until police notify next of kin and positively identify him. However, extinct tubes (the ones without flowing lava) are often used as tourist attractions in Hawaii.

The Kaumana Caves Park is a popular hiking destination, with tourists flocking to see the tubes formed after during the 1881 eruption from Mauna Loa.
