Working to get 737 Max back in air, says Boeing

The plane may be formally cleared to fly before the end of the year, and even though the companies have lost out on money due to the groundings, it will be at least another month before they are ready to welcome passengers on the 737 MAX again.

Boeing says it is in the final stages of making fixes to the Max, which has been grounded eight months after two crashes that killed 346 people.

"We have looked deeply at the MAX, and its design, and the processes over the a year ago - the software update we have extraordinary confidence in", assured Muilenburg.

Boeing said it provided technical documents to regulators "in a format consistent with past submissions".

European Aviation Safety Agency spokeswoman Janet Northcote said that after the Iowa meeting, her agency's executive director, Patrick Ky, said: "We think there is still some work to be done".

A flight-control system called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) pushed the nose of both planes down before crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.

Parker cautioned Wednesday that nothing is certain about the plane's return, "but we feel a lot better about the fact that indeed the aircraft is going to get certified sometime in the near future".

Calhoun said Muilenburg would refuse his 2019 bonus and would not accept any stock awards until all MAX jets returned to the air, which could take a year or more. Boeing, which kept any explanation of MCAS out of pilot manuals, is now revamping the system to make it easier for pilots to override.

The CEO of Boeing has turned his back on a multimillion-dollar bonus in the wake of ongoing scandals that have plagued the aviation company.

He said he was forgoing the bonuses to "send a message of responsibility". Several relatives of passengers who died in the crashes have said Muilenburg should resign, a move the CEO has resisted.

"While this happens we continue to work with the FAA and global regulators on certification of the software for safe return of the Max to service".

Almost 400 737 MAX jets (MAX 8 and MAX 9 models) from 59 airlines are stocked worldwide and more than 500 finished aircraft occupy the yards of Boeing's Seattle plant and airports in Washington state.

"We're keeping more of our older aircraft into next year because of the delay in the Max deliveries", he said.
