Celebrities petition for the freedom of death row inmate Rodney Reed

Kim Kardashian and Rodney Reed

Reed, who has spent more than 21 years on death row for the 1996 murder of Stacey Stites in Bastrop, Texas, is accused of assaulting, raping and strangling Stites, but has always maintained his innocence. Reed, a black man, and Stites, a white woman, were in a consensual relationship although the latter was engaged at the time to former police officer Jimmy Fennell.

The "Free Rodney Reed" petition now has 50,000 signatures and counting.

On Saturday, hundreds of people protested Reed's upcoming execution in front of the Capitol building in Austin, Texas.

The organisation has also compiled forensic evidence it believes would show that Reed was not even at the sight of the murder 23 years ago. "SIGN this petition if you don't believe the Government should kill an innocent man", and tagged Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.

"Especially in light of the new evidence that has continued to emerge, a commutation to a life sentence is necessary to ensure that Mr. Reed is not executed in error", his attorneys said. "If I wouldn't have known her, I wouldn't have been associated with her [and] I wouldn't be in this situation", he said.

At the time of his alleged confession, Fennell was in prison for abducting and raping another woman. "He goes on to say that during one particular conversation, Fennell was discussing Stiles with" a lot of hatred and resentment". He was released in March 2018 after serving 10 years, according to KXAN.

Kristen Stewart 'wanted to' marry Robert Pattinson
She regrets that their fear of being spotted by the press meant they could not experience normal romantic moments together. Both Stewart and Pattinson have gone on to have other relationships and, most importantly, admirable careers in Hollywood.

Although Fennell was identified as suspect during police's investigation into Stites' murder, he was never charged in connection with the case. She additionally shared that a new witness has come forward on the record, stating that Reed "was NOT the murderer!"

Fennell's legal professional, Robert Phillips, explained Snow is a job legal and his assert is not credible nor in the "world of fact". Andrew filed a statement detailing how Stacey's fiance admitted to killing her for sleeping around.

The Innocence Project wrote on its website that the new evidence in the case "could not have been discovered or presented in any of Reed's prior pleadings and supports his actual innocence".

The Texas Attorney General's office, which handled the case on appeal, and the Abbott's office did not respond to requests for comment.

Last month, Kardashian West said she has been "investigating" Reed's case.
