Man Climbs World's 14 Highest Peaks In Six Months

The 36-year-old Nirmal Purja a former member of the Gurkhas as well as the elite Special Boat Service kicked off his ambitious “Project Possible” in April

It took almost eight years for mountaineers to reach the top of the world's 14 peaks higher than 8,000 metres, but a Nepali mountaineer, who is a former British Marine, completed the feat in six months and a week on Tuesday, reports said.

The previous record for the 14 mountains above 8,000 metres (around 26,250 feet) - completed by Nirmal Purja at 8.59 am (1259 GMT) on Tuesday - was nearly eight years.

"Purja finished climbing Cho Oyu of 8,201 meters in China in September and applied for permission to climb Shishapangma in October", said Pema Tinley, deputy director of Tibet Mountaineering Association, adding that the association supported Purja in logistics, sending two liaison officers, three guides along with two drivers to assist him.

Polish climber Jerzy Kukuczka completed the same feat after 7 years, 11 months and 14 days in 1987 after Italy's legendary Reinhold Messner became the first to scale the 14 peaks a year earlier.

"MISSION ACHIEVED! says @nimsdai from the summit of #Shishapangma", read the post on Purja's Facebook page, referring to the final peak in China.

According to Purja's team, he topped Annapurna of 8, 091 meters on April 23, and started a whirlwind in May, during which he summited five mountains above 8,000 meters and July also saw five peaks topped.

A Nepalese man has broken the world record after climbing the 14 tallest mountains on Earth in record time. He dubbed the 14-peak goal "Project Possible". A photo he took on Everest showed a long line of climbers waiting to reach the summit, which quickly went viral. It took Purja 189 days to climb the mountains, which are all more than 26,246 feet high.

Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks in Kathmandu, which equipped the expedition, said the 36-year-old Purja was in good health and safely descending from the summit.

In May, Purja climbed Everest (8,848 metres), descended to South Col and climbed adjoining Lhotse (8,516 metres), then flew to Makalu base camp and climbed that peak (8,481 metres) too, all in 48 hours.

His post said he was accompanied by at least three other climbers.

He also said that he wanted to use his feats to inspire the next generation of Nepali climbers to break his records. However, China proved to be the hardest to accomplish when Purja faced resistance from the Chinese government over the climbs.
