Warren campaign challenges Facebook ad policy with 'false' Zuckerberg ad

Elizabeth Warren trolls Facebook with 'false' Zuckerberg ad

"You're probably shocked, and you might be thinking, 'How could this possibly be true?'" Warren's campaign says in the ad, referring to the false claim that Zuckerberg had endorsed Trump. Facebook just takes the cash, no questions asked. The move comes after Facebook and other online platforms refused to remove Trump campaign ads containing baseless claims about fellow 2020 contender and former vice president Joe Biden.

"This decision, put into place a year ago, has sparked a sharp backlash this week among Democrats, who complain that it gives President Trump free rein to use major social media platforms as disinformation machines", the Post notes, referencing Warren's ad as well as former Vice President Joe Biden's recent request that Facebook remove a dishonest Trump campaign ad.

"Facebook holds incredible power to affect elections and our national debate", she said in another tweet.

In response to the Warren campaign ad, Trump campaign spokesman Gary Coby tweeted: "Everyone knows Warren has lied to help her career".

Warren, who campaigns on breaking up big tech companies like Facebook and Google because they have an outsized influence, tweeted on Saturday that the fake ad was created to see "just how far" Facebook's policy would let her campaign go.

"Now, they've changed their policy so they can profit from lies to the American people". Biden's campaign has dismissed Trump's allegations as a smear.

With this ad, Facebook's own tools are now being used against it, and it has placed itself in a win-win situation.

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan Resigns
I want to thank the President for the opportunity to serve alongside the men and women of the Department of Homeland Security. He took over in April after Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen quit, and he was the fourth person to lead the department in two years.

Both YouTube and Twitter told Reuters that the Trump campaign ad did not violate their policies.

In a statement provided to Fox News, Facebook defended its stance on not censoring political speech.

Despite the criticism, Facebook has doubled down on its political advertising policy.

"Our approach is grounded in Facebook's fundamental belief in free expression, respect for the democratic process, and the belief that, in mature democracies with a free press, political speech is already arguably the most scrutinized speech there is", the New York Times reports Facebook's head of global elections policy, Katie Harbath, wrote in the letter to the Biden campaign. "It is unacceptable for any social media company to knowingly allow deliberately misleading material to corrupt its platform". A long-running argument by Democrats is that Russian Federation used Facebook to help Trump win the 2016 election.

In leaked audio obtained by The Verge, Zuckerberg said at a recent internal meeting that, should Warren seek to implement these plans, Facebook would "go to the mat and fight".

Warren, in particular, has taken aim at the social media giant, vowing to break up the company and combat its allegedly anti-competitive practices.
