The Syrian Kurdish-led administration in northeastern Syria said on Saturday that 191,069 people have been displaced as a result of Turkish military operations.

Areas in north-eastern Syria under SDF control have come under heavy bombardment from Turkey since it launched its offensive on Wednesday. "Mine and booby trap searches are being carried out".

"Most of the Syrian National Army fighters, the friendly indigenous components of the operation, are local Arabs and Turkmens from the region", he said.

Ankara says the goal of its assault it to defeat the Kurdish YPG militia - the main component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - which it designates as a terrorist group over its links to insurgents in Turkey.

Five IS members also escaped from a prison in Qamishli amid Turkish shelling on Friday, the SDF said.

"Now the SDF's attack has started and there are very fierce clashes", Qamishlo told Reuters.

The Pentagon's official remarks contrasted with a statement from the Turkish Defense Ministry on Friday.

Turkish air strikes on Kurdish-held towns and intense artillery exchanges caused mounting casualties on both sides of the border.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday Turkey won't stop until the Syrian Kurdish forces withdraw below a 32 kilometre (20 miles) deep line from the border. Erdogan threatened to send them to Europe if the European Union did not back his assault.

On Saturday morning, thick plumes of smoke rose around Ras al Ain, one of two Syrian border towns targeted in the offensive, as Turkish artillery pounded the area.

An AFP correspondent in the area said Turkish troops and allied Syrian rebels had entered the town but had yet to capture it.

It noted France's "firm condemnation of the unilateral offensive engaged by Turkey in the northeast of Syria".

"There was no shooting of the USA observation point".

A further 90,000 women and children affiliated with ISIS fighters are also said to be held in detention centers in northern Syria.

Pro-Turkish Syrian fighters gather near the Turkish village of Akinci along the border with Syria on October 11, 2019.

The Britain-based watchdog group said the humanitarian situation is worsening, noting that the Turkish assault could lead to a "humanitarian catastrophe". Syrian Kurdish forces appeared to be holding out in some areas of the town.

A Pentagon official told Newsweek that the Turks "should know" where the U.S. positions are. "If Turkey can get us to leave so they can siege Kobane, it's all over", one Coalition officer told Telegraph reporter Josie Ensor. "God willing victory will be ours".

The Turkish offensive began on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump ordered American troops to pull back from the border.

On Saturday, decried being "abandoned" by Washington.
