Trade, defence, terror: Ten takeaways from Xi-Modi seaside summit

India and China- home to more than a third of humanity- have never been the best of friends

But the question of Kashmir was not discussed during Saturday's summit and instead issues of trade and investment were taken up, Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said. "The Wuhan summit instilled a new momentum and trust in our relations and today's "Chennai Connect" is the start of a new era in India-China relations", said Modi. He said both the leaders are concerned that terrorism continues to pose a common threat and it is important to urge the global community to strengthen the framework against training, financing and supporting terrorist groups throughout the world and on a non-discriminatory basis. Both Xi and Modi said the two countries need to look to the future.

In his response, China President Xi Jinping recalled that the initiative for the informal summit came from Mr. Modi and he had agreed to the proposal that, he said, was a "good idea". He said both the countries are now regaining the prominent position.

India has caused Trump to have doubt recently, as Modi also cozied up to Russian Federation in recent weeks, with Modi and Putin agreeing military collaboration and closer ties last month.

The two leaders took a stroll along the beach and were seen having an engaging discussion.

They did however agree to step up their efforts so "that the global community strengthens the framework against training, financing and supporting terrorist groups throughout the world", said the Indian statement.

Donald Tusk hands Boris Johnson last-minute Brexit boost
After his meeting with Barclay, Barnier said it was essential to keep focus. But the details of Mr Johnson's concessions are not yet known.

India and China, both in the process of national rejuvenation, are facing many similar challenges, he said, adding that India is willing to deepen and expand pragmatic cooperation with China, and learn from each other in their exchanges.

Before the delegation-level talks, Xi and Modi held a one-on-one discussion lasting about an hour at the Fisherman's Cove resort, sending a clear signal of an intent to refashion ties for greater bilateral cooperation. The talks continued on Saturday as well and the leaders of both the nations vowed to jointly combat terrorism and radicalisation, signalling a recalibration of bilateral ties. "We should ensure the success of next year's celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and the China-India year of people-to-people exchanges", Xi said.

A meeting between Xi and Modi in Wuhan, China, in April 2018 was preceded by tensions caused by a 10-week standoff between their countries' armed forces on the Bhutan border. The Prime Minister said that, in the Wuhan Summit, both the countries decided not to allow any differences to become disputes and be prudently managed. The informal talks were followed by a lunch for the Chinese President, which was hosted by PM Modi. For most part of the last 2000 years, India and China have been economic powers, he said.

The two had been embroiled in a trade war with increasing sanctions and trade barriers being placed after Washington were left furious with Beijing stealing western trade secrets and hacking businesses.

Noting that he attaches great importance to the friendship with Xi, Modi said he is willing to maintain such conducive and effective strategic communication with Xi and together create a lovely future for India-China relations.
