Steam's 'Remote Play Together' will give online support to local multiplayer games

Steam's new

According to a message sent to devs which has been shared online, "Remote Play Together" is coming to Steam beta soon, and will let players get stuck into local multiplayer games together online. As the name implies, it basically uses remote play functionality to simulate the experience of playing together in a room (short of having the other players actually in the room).

For folks without easy access to a mate who'll pop round for a bit of local multiplayer action, the new Steam feature allows the streaming of a local multiplayer game's screen from one PC to another Steam user's PC. When the Friend accepts an invitation to play, it's as though they're playing side by side at the same machine. Once the beta goes live, players will launch a game with support for local multiplayer, then invite a friend to join them using the Steam Overlay.

As the email suggests, all local co-op and split-screen games will automatically support Remote Play Together. Players will need to have a connection between "10 to 30" Mbps in order to ensure a more seamless experience. Local co-op hung on as a common feature for years after the internet became available, but as the quality of online matches improved, developers began to put less emphasis on local play (cooperative or competitive) as a whole.

Toyota Previews Sleek New Second Generation Mirai Ahead of Tokyo Motor Show
It's fair to say the first-generation Mirai was fiendishly clever; it's also fair to say that its design was an acquired taste. The company plans to increase sales of hybrid cars and SUVs in the U.S.to 25% of deliveries by 2025, up from about 9% today.

Steam is finding a way to take local multiplayer online, apparently recognizing that sometimes couch co-op isn't an option.

It appears that an exciting new multiplayer feature is headed to Steam.

While this may not have extensive reach for most people, it does ensure that a lot of games will now be playable with friends far away.
