Man arrested after five stabbed at UK shopping mall

Police run through the Arndale Centre in Manchester in response to a stabbing incident

A man has been arrested on suspicion of a terrorism offence after multiple people were stabbed in Manchester's Arndale Centre.

The victims have been taken to hospital by ambulance, but no details on injuries were immediately available.

Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson said: "We do not know the motivation for this awful attack".

Footage posted online appeared to show one police officer restraining a suspect on the floor as another stands over him pointing a taser.

Freddie Houlder, 22, said he heard "a load of screams just outside" a store he was in.

A spokesperson said: "A 19-year-old woman was taken to hospital with stab wounds".

"Our thoughts are with the people injured".

"We have arrested the man, a male in his 40s, on suspicion of terrorism because of the nature and circumstances of this attack".

Appeals court rules House should get Trump financial records
His lawyers sued to block the subpoena, arguing that Congress had no legitimate legislative goal for getting the materials. Trump was fighting a subpoena by the House Oversight Committee demanding Mazars turn over the records .

"We are unable to comment any further as the incident is now being handled by Greater Manchester Police, who we will continue to support with their investigation".

The force said there were initially four people believed to be injured but another woman had since presented at hospital with a superficial wound.

The Arndale Centre had already been the scene of a terror attack in 1996 when the largest peacetime bomb ever detonated in Britain injured 212.

Armed police entered the centre after it was put on lockdown, with officers swarming on the shopping centre after reports of an attack just before midday local time. The man, in his 40s, was arrested on suspicion of terrorism although police said his motivation was not yet clear.

Houlder added: "Luckily she had quite a thick jacket".

Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his "shock" and praised the response of the emergency services in the aftermath of the attack.

Transport between Rochdale and Manchester city centre has been affected following a multiple stabbing at the Arndale shopping centre on Friday (11 October). "Thank you to our excellent emergency services who responded and who are now investigating what happened".

Jackson said the incident was "bound to bring back memories of the bad events of 2017", when 22 people were killed after a suicide bomber targeted a concert by pop star Ariana Grande at Manchester Arena, a venue only few hundred meters away.
