Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan has resigned from the post, just days after his speech at Georgetown University was shouted down by protesters.

President Trump tours a section of the southern border wall, in Otay Mesa, Calif., with acting Homeland Secretary Kevin McAleenan on September 18, 2019.Trump announced October 11, 2019, that McAleenan is stepping down.

The president said on Twitter that Mr McAleenan has done an outstanding job and border crossings are down.

McAleenan, who has years of experience with border issues, was seen initially in Trump's circle as someone who could get control over the crisis, despite his stance as a moderate who pushed for aid to be restored to Central American nations.

Prior to his appointment with DHS, McAleenan worked in various positions with Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and was confirmed as commissioner of CBP in March 2018.

He took over in April after Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen quit, and he was the fourth person to lead the department in two years. The acting deputy is David Pekoske, the head of the Transportation Security Administration.

As Breitbart News has chronicled for months, McAleenan had defied the Trump administration on multiple fronts, including most recently providing an interview to the Washington Post in which he attacked Trump's "Zero Tolerance" policy at the southern border and said he refused to call border crossers "illegal aliens". "That's uncomfortable, as the accountable, senior figure".

I want to thank the President for the opportunity to serve alongside the men and women of the Department of Homeland Security.
