Salia Woodbury, 10, left, from Irvine, Calif., on the set with "Sesame Street" muppet Karli and puppeteer Haley Jenkins during a taping about parental addiction in NY.

"In the United States, there are 5.7 million children under age 11, or one in eight children, living in households with a parent who has a substance abuse disorder", Sesame Workshop said in a statement.

"[If] even a parent at their most vulnerable - at the worst of their struggle - can take one thing away when they watch it with their kids, then that serves the goal", she said.

The introduction of her backstory follows other attempts by entertainment companies to explore the issues of addiction, including The Connors on ABC and Euphoria on HBO.

Salia's parents are in recovery after struggling with addiction and share her experience with the show's Karli-whose muppet character has a mom who is also in recovery. "My mom was having a hard time with addiction and I felt like my family was the only one going through it", the puppet proclaims.

"I'm proud of Mom and Dad for asking for help, and not using drugs or alcohol anymore".

Over the years, American children have learned a thing or two from the beloved Sesame Street characters, whether it's the building blocks of the English language with Big Bird or basic arithmetic from Count von Count.

"Yeah, a sickness that makes people feel like they have to take drugs or drink alcohol to feel OK".

The clip, entitled "It's Not Your Fault", is part of a series of online-only segments and resources which were made with the help of a child therapist. "For everything we've done-from military families to homelessness-it's all about how to make children free to talk and to give parents the tools to do just that". "And it's okay to open up to people about our feelings". Moe said he was grateful to help out with this topic.

Sesame Street has sometimes addressed real-life problems and social issues.

Sesame Street has bravely tackled issues from death to racism to autism, recently adding its first unhoused muppet as a way to raise awareness about poverty.

Per the press release, the content is part of the "Sesame Street in Communities" programming and is created to help children understand and cope with substance addiction issues in their lives.
