Turkey's MPs give go-ahead to Syria incursions

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif give a press conference in Ankara

The official said as of now, U.S. allied Kurdish militia was still going to be in control of the detention facilities.

The current mandate expires on October 30.

Zarif's tweeted his condemnation of the US role in Syria nearly immediately after news of a possible USA troop withdrawal came out.

Trump defended Turkey in Tuesday's tweets, saying the country is a big USA trading partner and had returned an American pastor after years of confinement there.

Meanwhile, Democratic Senator Chris Coons and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham on Tuesday demanded a senators-only briefing immediately on Syria from President Trump's administration.

Jonathan Schanzer, a Syria scholar at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, said even a limited Turkish incursion into northern Syria could quickly escalate. In fact, the Trump administration removed Turkey from the F-35 program last summer because the Turks refused to cancel the purchase of a Russian air defense system that is incompatible with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces.

Trump said Turkey understands that "any unforced or unnecessary fighting by Turkey will be devastating to their economy and to their very fragile currency".

Mekdad said that Kurdish militias in Syria were being "played" by Washington.

James Harden, Russell Westbrook show support for Chinese fans
The Chinese Basketball Association, chaired by Yao, said it was suspending "exchanges and cooperation" with the Rockets. In just a few days, China's state broadcaster said it was pulling Houston Rockets games off the air.

Mekdad says the homeland "welcomes all its sons" and that Damascus will solve all Syrian problems in a positive way, without violence.

Turkey said Tuesday it will go ahead with a military operation in northeastern Syria and won't bow to threats over its Syria plans, an apparent reply to U.S. President Donald Trump's warning.

He said Syria will defend all Syrian territory and will not accept any occupation. But he also threatened to "totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey" if its military action in Syria went too far. Ankara wants to create a so-called "safe zone" along the border, where Syrian refugees now residing in Turkey would be relocated.

Trump this week declared that USA troops will step aside for an expected Turkish attack on the Syrian Kurds, longtime US allies against the Islamic State group. "As the President has stated, Turkey would be responsible, along with European nations and others, for thousands of ISIS fighters who had been captured and defeated in the campaign lead by the United States", the department added.

The United States expects Turkey to take responsibility of captive fighters of the militant Islamic State group, a senior State Department official said on Monday, if Ankara's planned incursion into northeast Syria seizes areas where the detained militants are held.

"Where Turkey's security is concerned, we determine our own path, but we set our own limits", Oktay said.

Iranian state TV reported Tuesday that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, to express Tehran's opposition to the anticipated Turkish operation.

Zarif urged Turkey to respect Syria's integrity and sovereignty, the report said.
