Hong Kong ‘won’t rule out’ Chinese help over protests, says Carrie Lam

Hong Kong police advance down a road during clashes with protesters in the Wanchai district in Hong Kong

Rejecting foreign politicians' irresponsible remarks on Hong Kong, Lam urged them to stop maliciously criticizing Hong Kong's efforts to curb violence and glamorizing those who are committing violence as "peaceful demonstrators for freedom of expression".

Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said there will be NO use of emergency powers for the introduction of other laws.

Lam added that she now did not have any plan to put in place further measures using the emergency law, although "if the situations become so bad, then no option could be ruled out". "That's also the position of the central government that Hong Kong should tackle the problem on our own".

"I still strongly feel that we should find the solution ourselves", Lam told reporters Tuesday.

USA skateboard brand Vans is facing a Hong Kong boycott after it removed a protest-inspired shoe from a design competition. Financial markets were also closed for the holiday, although many shops and restaurants were open.

Sunday saw the first time that the Chinese military directly engaged with protesters, with personnel inside China's People's Liberation Army barracks in Hong Kong issuing a warning to protesters who shined laser pointers at the building.

"We need the people of Hong Kong to respect the law", Lam said.

Lam, who has said she must serve both the central government and the people of Hong Kong, was in Beijing last week for Oct.1 National Day celebrations but said she did not meet any central government officials to discuss "business".

Since June, the police have arrested 2,363 people, aged between 12 and 83, including 241 in the last four days, for offenses including unlawful assembly, rioting, possession of weapons, assaulting police, criminal damage and obstructing police duty.

During the press conference, Lam told a reporter that she has not ruled out calling on Beijing for assistance, though she and her team were committed to "restore order and calm" through Hong Kong's "legal and political instruments", as well as through her dialogue sessions out in the community. Rallies deteriorated into running clashes with police firing tear gas and charging with batons to disperse protesters across the city.

She appealed to property developers and landlords to offer relief to retailers whose businesses have been hit.

Schools reopened on Tuesday after a three-day holiday in the territory.

China dismisses such accusations, saying foreign governments, including Britain and the United States, have fanned anti-China sentiment.

The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) operator said the entire network - which carries four million people daily - would close at 8pm (1200 GMT), five hours earlier than usual.

"It is too early to say that the anti-mask is not effective", Lam said, before adding, "It would take time for it to be effectively implemented".

The metro system was shut down in an unprecedented move on Friday night after protesters set stations on fire and attacked ticket machines.

Patten said Lam "would have to be crazy" to have made her recent decisions on her own without being pressured into them.

"I've never said anything like that", she said, pointing out that many in her staff were openly supportive of the democracy protests and free to express their views.
