Battery Upgrade for the ISS

US Astronauts Complete 1st Of 5 Power Upgrade Spacewalks

As Cnet reports, astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir are set to do the first-ever all-female spacewalk on October 21.

On October 11, Mr Morgan and Ms Koch are scheduled to venture outside again for another spacewalk to continue the battery replacements on the first of the two power channels for the station's far port truss, NASA said.

The six-member Expedition 61 has officially started as NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin along with UAE astronaut Hazza Ali AlMansoori undocked from the International Space Station on Thursday. The first is Sunday; Koch will go out with Andrew Morgan.

PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff: What you need to know
Based in San Francisco, with more than 20,000 employees, the company delivers some of the nation's cleanest energy to 16 million people in Northern and Central California.

The batteries are so bulky that they block the astronauts' view of each other, so they rely on spoken exchanges to coordinate their efforts during each seven-hour spacewalk. But NASA had to scrap the plan just a few days in advance because there wasn't enough time to get a second medium-size spacesuit ready. NASA's spacesuits are not differentiated by sex but female astronauts tend to require smaller sizes than their male counterparts and only one medium sized suit was available when the walk was originally set to take place. A medium was sent up to the station in June. "I hope that me being up here and giving my best every day is a way for me to say thank you to people like her, who not only paved the way through their examples but actively reached out to make sure we could be successful".

Koch and Meir, a marine biologist who arrived at the orbiting lab last week, are both members of NASA's Astronaut Class of 2013, the first and only one with an even split between men and women. Summer Worden, McClain's spouse, accused the astronaut of identity theft and improper access to her private financial records from space. In addition to her first spacewalk with Koch, she will also conduct a spacewalk with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano.

"I think it's important because of the historical nature of what we're doing, and in the past, women haven't always been at the table", Koch said on NASA TV. There are 11 spacewalks coming up in the next few months - 10 USA and one Russian. "And it's wonderful to be contributing to the human spaceflight program, when everyone has a role, and that can lead, in turn, to increased chance for success". Only one is two women.
