Back-to-back meteor showers make this a great week for stargazing

The Draconids and Southern Taurids are taking over the night sky this week

Stargazers in the USA will get the chance to enjoy three different meteor showers this October, two of which peak back-to-back this week.

Two meteor showers will peak on consecutive nights this week, including one known for bringing incredibly bright fireballs.

Two meteor showers-the Draconids and the Southern Taurids-are set to peak this week, while another, the Orionids, will reach maximum activity later in the month.

The AMS said that these meteors are poorly seen from the southern hemisphere due to low radiant altitude seen from below the equator.

This meteor shower is considered to be relatively minor, with just five to ten meteors visible per hour normally-although some exceptional years have seen much higher rates-AccuWeather reported.

In 2011, European observers of the stars were treated to six hundred shooting stars an hour, which is known as the dragon "awakening".

Like other meteor showers, the Southern Taurids will be best viewed during the dark hours before dawn, according to NASA. As bits of the comet's debris hit the atmosphere, they disintegrate into bright flashes of light that streak through the sky.

Science of far-away planets and infant universe wins Nobel prize
Kaelin meanwhile told reporters it was a moment he had dreamt of for a long time . James Peebles won the award "for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology ".

The Draconids typically produce between 5-10 meteors an hour. However, an outburst like that is not expected this year.

Stargazers will want to look for meteors in areas of the sky away from the moon, since it will take up most of the sky at night.

The Draconid shower is active every year around the time of October 6 to October 10.

Like always, the visibility of meteor showers relies on a number of factors, including weather conditions and the location of the stargazer.

You don't need any special equipment or skills to view a meteor shower.

Unlike planet-hunting or distant star gazing, meteor watching is a game of patience and comfort. But this isn't the case.

If you miss the two meteor showers this week, the Orionid meteor shower will peak later this month from october 21-22, bringing about 20 meteors per hour.
