Possible staffer kills 4 in knife attack at Paris police HQ: Cops

A knife-wielding man attacked officers inside police headquarters in the heart of Paris on Thursday afternoon.

Police did not immediately confirm details of the incident or the motive of the attacker.

Three of the victims were men and one was a woman, Heitz said.

The neighbourhood where the police compound is located, a busy tourist destination, was locked down, the Cité metro stop was closed, and the bridge between Notre-Dame and the headquarters building was blocked off.

French Interior Christophe Castaner is on his way to the scene of the crime, according to BFM TV.

Union official Loic Travers said the police murders, which unfolded about noon local time, were of a magnitude he had never seen before. Local media is reporting the same, however, that information has not been confirmed by officials.

"I was surprised to hear shooting because this is not a place where you hear that kind of thing".

The Paris prosecutor is at the scene, but anti-terror agencies have not been involved at this stage.

A third officer, who Mr Siamandi described as the person who shot and killed the assailant, came out on his knees, also in tears.

Earlier in the day, Loïc Travers, an official with the police union Frances Alliance Police National, told reporters that at least five had been killed, including the attacker, according to a clip posted to Twitter. "Moments later, I saw police officers crying".

Thousands of French police officers demonstrated in Paris on Wednesday for better working conditions in a rare protest by the force, against the backdrop of a spike in suicides within their ranks.

Still, police are not treating the attack as a terrorist act, saying the employee appears to have been feuding with supervisors.

And in April 2017, a man opened fire on a police van on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, killing an officer and wounding two others along with a pedestrian.
