Trump May Ban Flavored E-Cigarettes: Who Wins, Who Loses

The surprise White House announcement could remake the multibillion-dollar vaping industry, which has been driven by sales of flavored nicotine formulas such as "grape slushie" and "strawberry cotton candy".

"Before we would give the students leeway", Thomsen says, "Now we're cracking down on it because we've got kids who would never have picked up cigarettes that are now really addicted to this habit; it's easily accessible for them".

On Wednesday, the day after the sixth death was reported, President Trump, flanked by the heads of the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services, announced that his administration is planning to remove flavored electronic cigarettes from the market because "people are dying".

No single device, ingredient or additive has been identified, though many cases involve marijuana vaping. It's apparently a hot topic in the Trump household, as first lady Melania Trump recently tweeted her concerns about children and vaping.

Azar suggested that the ban on flavors could be the first step of many to keep children from vaping. Don't vape.' We don't like vaping.

Donald Trump and the Federal Drug Administration have teamed up to fight youth e-cigarette use.

The one-year abstinence rate among e-cigarette users was 18 percent, compared to 9.9 percent among a group who used other nicotine replacement products like gum or patches.

Health officials in Canada aren't aware of any Canadians who are ill or who have died as a result of vaping but that doesn't mean they're not out there.

Azar then said that new data from the National Youth Tobacco survey shows "a continued surging" in e-cigarette use among teens and that young users are specifically drawn to the many flavors now on the market, like mint and candy. The vast majority of underage teens consumed fruit, menthol or mint flavors.

US Supreme Court upholds Trump's migrant ban
Morgan said the Trump administration is "doing everything that they can" to address what he described as the crisis on the border. The court's ruling handed a victory to Trump at a time when much of his immigration agenda had been struck down by lower courts.

Most of us are well aware that vaping and smoking hurt our lungs.

But a Juul spokesman said in a statement that the company "strongly" agreed with the need for "aggressive action" on flavors. The new policy would allow the FDA to remove flavored products from the market.

"Unfortunately the entire category of e-cigs was put at risk largely as a result of the youth abuse of mostly one manufacturer's products", Gottlieb said.

The agency guidance announced Wednesday instead would require vape devices to come off the market soon and await FDA clearance.

A few local governments, including San Francisco, have passed bans on flavored tobacco.

"To deprive those smokers from access to e-cigarettes, which we know are substantially less harmful, I think is a awful decision", Neil McKeganey, of the UK-based Center for Substance Use Research - which is partly funded by the industry - told AFP.

"If we find that children start surging into tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes or if we find marketing practices that target children, we'll engage in enforcement actions there also", Azar said. But FDA officials have repeatedly delayed enforcing regulations on them, referencing industry fears that regulation could wipe out thousands of small companies. E-cigarettes generally heat liquid containing nicotine.

During 2015-2017, almost 2,035 e-cigarettes have exploded or caused burns in the United States alone. The agency notes that scientists still have a lot to learn about whether e-cigarettes are effective for quitting smoking, and that additional research is needed to understand long-term health effects.
