The THE World University Rankings, published once a year, assess nearly 1 400 institutions worldwide. According to the U.S. Department of Education, there are more than 4,000 four-year universities in the country. "Oxford's success is in large part due to our research collaborations with other excellent universities around the world and we remain determined both to deepen and to expand these partnerships, whatever Brexit brings".

The University of Auckland has come in at 179th equal on the list of the world's top universities. "However, it is disappointing to see the country fall out of the top 300 of the rankings this year, with only a small number of institutions registering progress", Ellie Bothwell, THE rankings editor said. The California Institute of Technology rises three places to second, followed by the University of Cambridge, Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "It must also be stated, however, that the traditional Anglo-American powerhouses will not be displaced at the top of our rankings easily". The university also did well nationally, gaining six places to land 42 position among United Kingdom universities, indicating a climb in the tables on both fronts.
