Google Earth Leads to Discovery of Man Missing Since 1997

A listing about the case reads: "Amazingly, the vehicle had been plainly visible on a Google Earth satellite image of the area since 2007, but apparently no one had noticed it until 2019, when a property surveyor saw the auto while looking at Google Earth".

The auto, which was not visible from the ground level but was obvious in the image from space, turned out to be a 1994 Saturn SL, cops said.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office investigators said Wednesday that the skeletal remains of William Moldt were found in a vehicle submerged in a retention pond in the Grand Isles at Wellington community.

Moldt was 40 years old at the time he went missing on November 7, 1997. A coroner has now confirmed that they belonged to Mr Moldt.

His vehicle had been "plainly visible" on a Google Earth photo of the area since 2007, according to the Charley Project, which keeps an online list of missing people.

He failed to return home from a night out at a club when he was 40 years old.

An image of the submerged auto is still available to view on Google Earth. According to the Charley Project, which maintains an online list of anyone missing a year or more, someone spotted the auto on Google Earth. The former resident told a current resident, who flew a drone above the site and immediately called authorities when he confirmed that the vehicle was there.

The housing development where Moldt's remains were found was reportedly under construction at the time he went missing.

Police dragged the auto from the pond only to discover the skeletal remains inside.

He had called his girlfriend at around 9: 30 p.m.to say he will be home soon, but she never heard from him again.

Although he was not a frequent drinker, on that particular evening he had several drinks at the bar.
