GM recalls more than 3.4M pickups, SUVs to fix brake issues

GM recalls nearly 3.8M pickups SUVs to fix brake issues

Facing pressure from the federal government, General Motors is recalling more than 3.4 million pickup trucks and SUVs nationwide that may have potential brake problems.

Also included in the recall are the 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade and the GMC Yukon, Chevy Suburban and Tahoe including 2015 to 2017 models.

The millions of trucks and SUVs have a brake issue that GM said resides in aging pumps in the brake system.

Owners began receiving notifications of the recall on September 6.

NHTSA, the government's road safety agency, began investigating the problem in November of a year ago after getting 111 complaints from owners of poor brake performance. A GM spokesman, Dan Flores, told Consumer Reports in an email that the company is aware of 113 crashes and 13 injuries because of the problem; no deaths have been reported. Oil flows into the pump through a filter screen, but excess oil sludge and other debris could accumulate on the filter screen, reducing the screen's effectiveness over time while also, possibly, increasing braking effort and braking distance. The move, according to Reuters, is to address a vacuum pump issue that may potentially make braking more hard, and the problem has been linked to 113 accidents and 13 injuries. The reprogramming will activate the secondary system faster.

The automaker says the fix will improve brake performance in any instance where vacuum power drops and noted most of the reported incidents involved motorists driving at low speeds.

The recall comes 10 months after NHTSA opened its investigation and over two months after the recall was announced in Canada. That can cause the computer to send a signal disabling the fuel injectors.
