Roy axed as England seek redemption in final Ashes Test

Megan Schutt Creates History After Claiming ODI Hat-Trick

Australia players attend a net session at The Oval on Tuesday.

Joe Root on Wednesday wore the exhausted, nearly haunted, look of many an England captain coming to the end of the road as he tried to summon up one last effort to avoid losing a second Ashes series under his watch.

Ben Stokes will play as a specialist batsman because of a shoulder injury, which has prompted selectors to swing the axe on Roy.

England have recalled all-rounder Sam Curran and paceman Chris Woakes in place of Roy and Craig Overton for the series finale that starts on Thursday.

The pitches have been generally flatter than usual from the opening day of the four Tests, which was evident when Australia scored close to 500 in the first innings at Old Trafford to set up the win.

"It's bitterly disappointing to not have got the Ashes back, but we haven't lost anything yet", he said. "The series could have looked different". They won the 2017-18 Ashes series and the tourists lead the current series 2-1. "It is important we win this game and have a really strong winter and move forward as a group".

Root has made three ducks in the series and averages 30 but played down suggestions his batting had suffered because of being captain.

Australia will be looking to cap off the Ashes tour with a win after a successfully retaining the Ashes in Manchester.

West Indies women's poor batting form stretched to the third and final ODI game of the series, paving the way for Australia's series sweep through yet another crushing win over the hosts.

"We are very hungry, we have already spoken a lot about it", he told reporters on Wednesday.

"I feel like we could just be a little bit more biased towards our own team", he said. "As a group last week's result was brilliant and we played very well but the guys are aware this match is bigger than that one, this is our grand final".

Root said England were trying to find a chink in the armour of the former Australia skipper, who is the top-ranked batsman in the world. "You've still got to perform whether you're young or you're a veteran, but we also have to recognise they are young batsmen and it's a really tough school and hopefully they'll come through at some point".

AUSTRALIA (from): Marcus Harris, David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine (captain), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Peter Siddle.

At least a line-up that sees Stokes at four, Jonny Bairstow at five, while still keeping wicket, and Jos Buttler at six allows room for Sam Curran to make his first Ashes appearance at seven in the all-round role vacated by Stokes.
