Opposition politicians attack Boris Johnson for Facebook question time while ignoring parliament

PORT REPORT A

After parliament ordered Prime Minister Boris Johnson last week to seek a Brexit delay beyond October 31 unless he strikes a deal to smooth the transition, Brexit is up in the air with options ranging from a turbulent no-deal exit to a referendum that could reverse the entire endeavour.

Johnson described accusations that he was being anti-democratic as "a load of nonsense" after he suspended parliament until October 14.

Judges at the Court of Session in Edinburgh said the government's action was illegal "because it had the objective of stymieing Parliament".

Protesters demonstrate outside the House of Commons, London.

Dominic Grieve, one of 21 lawmakers kicked out of the Conservative group in Parliament by Johnson last week after voting against the government, said it was possible the prime minister had misled Queen Elizabeth II - whose formal approval is needed to suspend Parliament - about his motives.

Labour's shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer said: "This is really important".

Members of parliament passed legislation last week seeking to force Johnson to ask European Union leaders for an extension if no agreement is reached in hopes of averting what they see as disastrous effects of a so-called no-deal Brexit.

A government spokesman: "We are disappointed by today's decision, and will appeal to the UK Supreme Court".

"Mr Johnson doesn't have a majority, the Speaker is very concerned about the circumstances of the prorogation, his concerns have been vindicated by this ruling and therefore Parliament should return and we should be able to get on with our jobs representing our constituents".

However, as the court gave no order for the suspension to be lifted, parliament remains prorogued for the time being.

The appeal judgement ostensibly reverses an initial finding in the same case at Edinburgh's Court of Session last Wednesday.

But that was overturned Wednesday on appeal. He added, "It was to be inferred that the principal reasons for the prorogation were to prevent or impede Parliament holding the executive to account and legislating with regard to Brexit, and to allow the executive to pursue a policy of a no-deal Brexit without further parliamentary interference".

In a separate case brought by anti-Brexit campaigner Gina Miller, the High Court in London also ruled last week that Mr Johnson had acted lawfully. Catherine Haddon, a senior fellow at independent think tank the Institute for Government, tweeted that the ruling "does not (yet) change the prorogation itself".

The government refused to comply with another part of Parliament's demand - that it hand over emails and texts among officials and aides discussing the decision to suspend Parliament. Britons voted 52% to 48% three years ago in favour of Brexit.

Scotland has a largely pro-EU electorate, voting by 62-38 percent to remain in the European bloc in the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Johnson ruled out a pact with Farage. But EU officials say the United Kingdom has made no concrete proposals.
