After string of mass shootings, Democrats begin new push for gun control

Congressional Democrats vow to prioritize gun legislation

A bipartisan group of three United States senators on Wednesday said they were attempting to revive legislation that failed in 2013 to close loopholes on the law requiring gun sale background checks, but were awaiting word on whether President Donald Trump will support their effort.

Mr. Trump had expressed an interest in doing something on background checks in the wake of the shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, last month that claimed the lives of more than 30 people, but has generally been more focused on the mental health side of the debate.

Over in the House, No. 2 Democrat Steny Hoyer of Maryland said the chamber would vote in October on a red flag bill aimed at keeping guns out of the hands of mentally ill people or those convicted of hate crimes, along with legislation to ban high capacity gun magazines.

The issue of gun violence re-emerged in Congress after back-to-back mass shootings in Texas and OH last month. Speaking to reporters at the Capitol, he took aim at his Democratic counterpart, Sen.

On Tuesday, McConnell did say that White House aides were working on a proposal that the president would sign and that "until that happens, all this is is theatrics".

A visibly angry House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has told reporters Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was to blame for people dying, because he was getting in the way of approving legislation to curb gun violence.

At one point, Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath of Georgia, who lost her son to gun violence, said, "I know the pain of losing a child to gun violence ... for every single day that we fall into not taking action, mothers and fathers across this country will live through the same nightmare that I did".

Corbyn commits to second Brexit vote if Labour Party wins general election
Efforts will be put into getting a Leave deal - pleasing Unite - but there will also be an option to Remain - pleasing the GMB.

The bill still needs to be voted on by the full House to advance and the Republican-controlled Senate has not said what gun control legislation, if any, it would accept. Trump, he noted, had long ago said he would veto the House-passed background check bill.

Trump has not yet made clear what legislation he would support.

Gun control presents a particularly sticky political situation for Republicans and moderate Democrats in red states, as the National Rifle Association - which adamantly opposes gun control measures under consideration - still wields substantial influence despite its own internal upheaval.

"He is very engaged and he would like to accomplish something", said Toomey.

"If you don't think that's going to cause a significant amount of problems when you are actually on the ground ... you're nuts", Armstrong said.

Toomey, who Trump mentioned by name along with Manchin and Sen.

The legislation, which will now be considered by the full House, comes more than a month after gun safety surged back to the forefront of US public debate in the wake of back-to-back mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.
