U.K. Parliament speaker to step down

Bercow sparked ire among Conservative MPs with his interpretation of Commons rules

A video grab from footage broadcast by the UK Parliament's Parliamentary Recording Unit (PRU) shows Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow announcing to MP's that he would step down from his role on 9 September 2019 in London.

"If Labour want to reward him with a peerage for services to Labour they are welcome to try".

The prorogation, suspending Parliament for five weeks and ending the longest parliamentary session in United Kingdom history, makes a general election extremely unlikely until at least mid-November.

"He has to keep proceedings going, and there was a lot of noise, I was disagreeing with the leader of the SNP".

"If the House does not so vote, I have concluded that the least disruptive and most democratic course of action would be for me to stand down at the close of business on Thursday, October 31".

"The week also after that may be quite lively and it would be best to have an experienced figure in the chair for that short period".

There were unprecedented scenes in the House of Commons last night as Parliament was suspended for the next five weeks - with Brexit right around the corner.

It all ended around 2 a.m. (9 p.m. ET) when opposition lawmakers lined up to shake the Speaker's hand, capping off an acrimonious day in Parliament.

Zimbabwe government wants to bury Mugabe next Sunday
His nephew, Leo Mugabe, said the family would meet on Sunday to discuss the body's departure. To us, he was a father who liberated us.

A member of parliament since 1997, he has been speaker since June 2009 and has often been a thorn in the government's side.

In recent months he came under fire for a series of controversial rulings in the chamber which were widely considered to favour Remain supporters. Our democracy is the stronger for your being the speaker.

Bercow, known for his thundering cries of "Order!".

He added he has "never been in any doubt" about Mr Bercow's desire to operate on the basis that the executive must be answerable to the Commons in the same way as the House is answerable to the people.

"I have sought to increase the relative authority of this legislature, for which I will make absolutely no apology", Bercow told MPs.

"In every decision you have made, you have put one consideration above everything else: Your wish to enable the House of Commons to discuss matters and to have a view".

Deputy speaker Lindsay Hoyle confirmed he would stand to replace Mr Bercow. "He'll be missed by many of us in the @HouseofCommons".

Meanwhile, Mr Kawczynski has called for former Labour cabinet minister Harriet Harman to become the next Speaker of the House of Commons.
