Japan May Be Forced to Dump Radioactive Fukushima Water Into the Pacific

Since the meltdown, tens of thousands of tons of water have been used by the plant's operator Tokyo Electric to cool the nuclear fuel cores.

Harada said his view was based on a visit to the Fukushima complex, where he saw a number of tanks storing the water, and the Nuclear Regulation Authority's support for the water discharge. According to TEPCO, that proverbial tipping point will come in 2022, so naturally, the Japanese government is reviewing ideas and plans for just what to do with it all.

"There are no other options" other than dumping the water into the ocean and diluting it, Yoshiaki Harada said at a news conference in Tokyo. It has looked at other options such as discharging it into the sea and vaporization.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, in a separate press briefing, described Mr Harada's comments as "his personal opinion".

The Japanese government is awaiting a report from a panel before making a decision on how to dump the water.

'The whole of the government will discuss this, but I would like to offer my simple opinion'. Japan to dump 10,00,000 litres of radioactive contaminated water including tritium into Pacific Ocean. Tepco is not in a position to decide how to proceed and will follow the government's policy once it has made a decision, a company spokesman said.

Earlier this month, government officials told a meeting with embassy officials in Tokyo that they were still considering options for handling contaminated water at the Fukushima plant.

The damaged No. 3 reactor building at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Okuma, Japan, on February 25, 2016, five years after the plant was damaged by a magnitude 9.0 natural disaster and tsunami. Radioactive water from the damaged reactors has leaked and mixed with groundwater and rainwater from the plant.

Toxic water produced by cooling debris and other processes at the Fukushima plant is purified using the Advanced Liquid Processing System, said to be capable of removing nearly all radioactive materials except tritium.

Radioactive water from the plant has been filtered through the Advanced Liquid Processing System, which removes highly radioactive substances like strontium and caesium but leaves in the less unsafe tritium, according to TEPCO.
