Samsung Steps Up 5G Push with Galaxy Fold, A90

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold will go on sale Friday in South Korea

The company is once again allowing United States consumers to pre-register for the folding device, suggesting a re-release is imminent. The South Korean giant recently opened up registrations in a handful of countries including the USA but is yet to confirm the exact release date.

With the 5G rollout gathering pace around the world, we expect to see a whole host of new 5G phones at this year's IFA electronica trade show that opens in Berlin later this week. Even the smaller model has a large 6.3-inch display, which means the phone is still quite large.

According to Bloomberg, the South Korean giant is developing a new foldable with a 6.7-inch display that shrinks into a square when folded inwards like the upcoming Motorola Razr.

The company is reportedly collaborating with American designer Thom Browne on the design of the device.

On the back, you will find three cameras, with a 48-megapixel main unit (f/2.0 aperture).

After months of testing and tweaks, Samsung is finally nearly ready to ship its next-generation Galaxy Fold handset. So far, 5G smartphones cost an arm and a leg and the technology is mainly limited to exclusive variants of already pricey flagship devices.

In essence, the Galaxy Fold 2 will no longer be a smartphone that can turn into a tablet, but rather a pocketable clamshell device that can turn into a more regular candy bar-shaped smartphone when unfolded.

Samsung is seemingly ready to start selling its Galaxy Fold phones-for real this time. That form factor seems much more viable, with a screen size that's similar to today's phablets, and a practical fold that makes it easier to fit in a pocket. A new gaming processor will be used so you can enjoy a powerful gaming experience.

Samsung is testing the use of Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) for the inner display of its next foldable, which would measure in at only 3% the thickness of the glass conventionally used to protect smartphone displays.
