Injury ends Djokovic's US Open title defence

US Open Stan Wawrinka advances to quarterfinals after Novak Djokovic retires

Wawrinka broke Djokovic's serve in the third game of the set before the two shook hands. Wawrinka, as was the case in the French Open, has overperformed hugely on break points (13.1% overperformance here, based on service and return points won expectations) and that's a major part of why he's got to this stage. He had been surprisingly stopped a round short in 2018 by John Millman, preventing what would have been a matchup with eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

NEW YORK, Sept 2 ― Top-ranked defending champion Novak Djokovic retired with a shoulder injury after dropping the first two sets of today's US Open last-16 match against Stan Wawrinka.

On Sunday, Djokovic, 32, was trailing Stan Wawinka 6-4, 7-5, 2-1, when he chose to call it quits because of left shoulder pain that had been bothering him for weeks.

Federer hit 35 winners to eight for Goffin and fired 10 aces.

The victor of Wawrinka vs. Medvedev will face the victor of Federer vs. Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals.

Medvedev, 23, had his legs treated twice in the first set but played through the pain to become the youngest semifinalist at the U.S. Open since Novak Djokovic was also 23 in 2010.

Djokovic does not believe this latest setback to be a long-term issue - he plans to play in Tokyo in four weeks' time - and was defiant when asked in his post-match media conference about his dream of catching Federer and Nadal. Elina Svitolina meets Johanna Konta in another women's quarterfinal.

"It's no secret that I have a desire and a goal to reach the most Grand Slams and reach Roger's record, but at the same time it's a long road ahead hopefully for me", added the Serb.

Djokovic says 'life goes on' as injury wrecks US Open defense
I don't really pay too much attention on that. "He's a good friend, an incredible champion". Even more surprising, it opens up the possibility of Nadal and Federer playing in the U.S.

Grigor Dimitrov downed Alex de Minaur, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows for the first time.

The victor of that matchup goes to the semifinals against either Roger Federer or Grigor Dimitrov.

Earlier Sunday, Ash Barty was knocked out by Wang Qiang, leaving only one of this year's major champions in the women's tournament.

That was a really bad moment for the U.S. Open crowd.

With Wimbledon champion Simona Halep already out in the second round, only top-ranked Naomi Osaka remains among the women who won a Grand Slam tournament this year. He also won the 2014 Australian Open over Rafael Nadal for his first Grand Slam crown.

Federer had his best match of the tournament on Sunday, cruising past David Goffin to reach the last eight in NY for a 13th time.

"It's never the way you want to finish a match", Wawrinka said on the court after the win.
