Ariana Grande is suing Forever 21 for allegedly plagiarizing her likeness

Exclusive TMZ

Grande is demanding a minimum of $10 million in damages and a permanent injunction prohibiting Forever 21 from using her name, images and likeness in any future campaigns.

Ariana Grande and Forever 21 are heading to court.

"Rather than pay for that right as the law requires, defendants simply stole it", she said in the complaint, which was filed in federal court in California.

Grande boasts 163 million followers on Instagram and more than 65 million Twitter followers, and was worth approximately $48 million as of early July, according to Forbes.

While negotiations took place around December 2018 and January 2019, according to the lawsuit, an endorsement deal was never reached because the amounts that Forever 21 "offered to pay for the right to use Ms. Grande's name and likeness were insufficient for an artist of her stature", the documents state.

Between Jan. and February 2019, Forever 21 launched a campaign on its website and social media accounts that allegedly capitalized the success of Grande's album, Thank U, Next and allegedly copied scenes from her "7 Rings" music video.

Her lawsuit also comes on the heels of news that the company is reportedly in financial trouble and developing restructuring plans to avoid a possible sale or bankruptcy.

The clothes promoted in the ad look strikingly similar to outfits Grande wears in the video as well.

Photo shows example of Forever 21's unauthorized use of Ariana Grande's brand, September 3, 2019. "Even a single social media post by Ms. Grande can garner fees of several hundred thousand dollars, and her longer-term endorsement arrangements command fees in the millions of dollars", the suit reads.

It also hired a model with an "uncanny" resemblance to Ms Grande for some of its social media posts, she said.

Representatives for Forever 21 did not immediately respond to The Times' request for comment on Tuesday.
