India's Chandrayaan-2 ready for moon landing

Chandrayaan-2 ISRO says moon lander has successfully carried out second de-orbiting manoeuvre

As a prelude to the landing of Chandrayaan-2 on the lunar South Pole, its Lander Vikram has undergone its first de-orbit manoeuvre this morning.

According to details on the ISRO website, the orbit of Vikram Lander is 104 km x 128 km.

Vikram, the lander and Pragyan, the rover sitting inside Vikram successfully broke away for the orbiter, pushing the homegrown Chandrayaan-2 mission closer to its destination for a powered descent slated for September 7.

New Delhi: The scientists of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have today sent Vikram Lander into the opposite orbit at 8.50 am on September 3. At 5:05 the rover's solar panels will open.

The health of the Orbiter and Lander is being monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Bylalu, near Bengaluru.

ISRO: Separation of moon lander Vikram successful
The orbiter was catapulted with a ultimate push on its journey of greater than four, 00,000 km to the lunar orbit on August 14. According to ISRO , the Vikram Lander successfully separated from Chandrayaan2 Orbiter at 1:15 pm.

One more deorbit manoeuvre will be conducted on Wednesday and the orbit that the lander will achieve after this will be 39 X 110 km.

Fourth Lunar bound orbit maneuver for Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft was performed successfully 30 August at 6.18 pm.

The lander and rover will carry out experiments to find water on the lunar surface and map for chemicals and topography. It was later launched into space, a week later, on Mark-III, a Geo Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GLSV-MK III-M1), from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, in Sri Harikota, Andhra Pradesh. The successful launch was carried out exactly a week after the ISRO had aborted the launch on July 15, just 56 minutes before the launch due to a "technical snag".

Vikram, named after the father of India's space research programme Vikram A Sarabhai, is scheduled to land on the lunar surface near its south pole on September 7 at about 1.55 am.

The module has reached a distance of about 100km from the moon's floor, the gap company mentioned.
