One woman dead, one injured in knife attack in Sydney's city center

Screengrab of a man being tackled with a milk crate and chairs by members of the public in Sydney Australia

A man went on a stabbing rampage in downtown Sydney on Tuesday, killing one woman and wounding another before he was restrained by members of the public, police said, adding they were not treating it as a terrorist incident.

Leon said he saw people were running away from where firefighters were standing on the street - before a man covered in blood appeared with a knife.

Earlier NSW Police Force said in a statement: that "members of the public detained the man before police attended and arrested him". "He pursued him the hardest and managed to get a grip of him with another man", Mr Cuthbert told the publication. "Then, I quickly accelerated so he could get off the auto ..."

"I think it was an extraordinary response by the public and it just demonstrates people are prepared to do the right thing if called upon".

"Information was found on him that would suggest he had some ideologies related to terrorism ... but he has no apparent links to other terrorist organisations", NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller told the Morning Herald.

A Sky News reporter and other media reports said the man shouted "shoot me" at police.

Police escort the man from the scene near Clarence Street in Sydney.

"They were courageous and I use that word seriously".

Along with other passers-by, they used a milk crate and a chair to keep him pinned to the ground, he said.

Sydney's CBD came to a standstill at around 2PM this afternoon, when a man wielding a knife murdered one woman and stabbed another in a terrifying attack.

"To approach a person. with clear evidence of a stabbing previously, these people are heroes", police spokesman superintendent Gavin Wood said.

Reports of a man armed with a large knife on the streets of Sydney first emerged about 2:00pm, sparking a major police operation. She has been taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Cuthbert and his friends Paul and Luke O'Shaughnessy, all from Manchester in the United Kingdom, and Alex Roberts, from Cronulla, were shaken after the incident but said they did not hesitate once they saw the incident unfolding.

"We all just ran down the building and chased him down the street", said Roberts.

As the man lay restrained on the ground, Walker filmed a bottle of pills next to him, labelled Antenex.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison praised those who stopped the assailant.

"And I want to acknowledge those people, those members of the public who got involved. Our thoughts are with all those who have been impacted by this violent attack".
