Emotional Serena Williams retires from tournament final, opponent comforts her

Andreescu showed off her class during one of the biggest moments of her career

Andreescu approached her chair, offering words of encouragement and a consolatory hug as Williams tried to fight back tears.

Windsor native Faye Urban Mlacak had a feeling her 50-year-old record as the last Canadian woman to win the Rogers Cup would be broken by Bianca Andreescu.

It had been an emotionally draining match, despite it only lasting 20 minutes before Serena Williams retired with a back injury.

Williams explained in her post-match press conference she had been struggling with back spasms towards the end of her semi-final match against the Czech, Bouzkova.

"Sometimes, you can't push your body and she couldn't today and I wish her a fast recovery".

The Rogers Cup champions have chose to take a break this week after capturing titles on Sunday. She had only played one match in 134 days prior to her Toronto comeback.

It is Andreescu's second WTA Premier win of the season, and marks 17 victories in a row for the teenager.

Andreescu said: "Serena you made me cry a bunch over there". "I know now that I need to schedule my tournaments a little better". She apologised and vowed "to keep going".

With the victory on Sunday, Andreescu shot up to No. 14 in the tour rankings. It's going to take time, and I haven't been practising lots of singles until recently.

After a shoulder injury forced her to miss the French Open, Andreescu picked up where she left off in Toronto, beating world number five Kiki Bertens in the round of 16 and world number three Karolina Pliskova en route to the final. Monfils withdrew from the tournament following an ankle injury. "So I'm really, really happy".

During the award ceremony, 37-year-old Williams acknowledged the Toronto fans for their warm applause.

That question was answered Sunday afternoon when Andreescu, who is said to have a will of steel and a heart of gold, hoisted the winner's trophy.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion continued to be emotional after addressing the crowd. 'I know how it is to pull out of tournaments, it's not easy. "So, I was just trying to figure out how do you play a match where you have no rotation".

"I've had this before and it's, like, 24, 36 hours where I'm just in insane spasm and then it's, like, gone".

"I feel for Serena so much".

The moment occurred just moments after Andreescu was declared the victor of the tournament. For at least a few more nights, she will wake up in her own bed in Thornhill. And how I can become better as a person if I push myself through these tough moments. "I've slept incredible every night", she said.
