Apple Might Soon Offer Special iPhones To Security Scientists

The bug could be triggered only by an unknown app accessing the database.

The Check Point researchers discovered the vulnerability in SQLite, an industry-standard database format. "However, SQLite usage is so versatile that we can actually still trigger it in many scenarios". It would be interesting to see whether Apple will fix the bug or leave it as it is. The bug let remote attackers run arbitrary code or DoS an app by simply issuing an SQL query like a search. This spread covers eight years of devices (iOS 8 supports the 2011 iPhone 4S) and, with Tim Cook stating there are 1.4BN active iOS devices around the world, this is worrying news for the owners of pretty much all of them.

At the annual Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas last week on Thursday, Apple said it would open the process to all researchers, add Mac software and other targets to the research domain and offer a range of rewards, called "bounties", for the most significant findings.

Apple remains committed to user privacy and security. Surprisingly, Apple has not responded to this vulnerability officially. All they needed was some tape, a pair of spectacles, and an unconscious or sleeping iPhone user. This year the program has also been extended to Apple's connected ecosystem of MacOS, WatchOS and tvOS.

Do you think someone will be able to hack the iPhone? Google researchers shared the vulnerabilities with the iPhone maker, which fixed most of the flaws before they were made public.

Rwanda and Congo are discouraging travel across their border, as officials try to prevent further spread of the highly contagious Ebola virus.

Apple started its bounty program three years ago and only focused on its mobile platform, until now.

San Francisco: Apple has never shied away from boasting about how secure its systems are, but researchers have found that contacts saved on iPhones are vulnerable to an SQLite hack attack which could infect the devices with malware.

Cybersecurity firms such as the NSO Group demand over a million dollars from government agencies and private clients for remotely breaking into an iPhone.

Unlike other tech companies, Apple had previously only offered rewards to "invited researchers who tried to find flaws in its phones and cloud backups".
