Rocket League is saying farewell to loot boxes

Rocket League

Arguably, one of the biggest successes of this generation has been Rocket League. It is not to be excluded that this choice does not come directly from the developers but from Epic Games, which has recently acquired the Psyonix team. Now, after a few months of silence, Epic is about to change a fairly huge part of Rocket League: the lootboxes. Crates first appeared in Rocket League in 2016, inspired by Valve's Counter-Strike: Global Offensive similar mechanics.

Developer Psyonix confirmed in a blog post that Rocket League will "remove all paid, randomized Crates" from the game in an effort to create "the best possible experience for our players all over the world".

Traditional DLC, the premium pass, and Esports shop items will continue to be on sale alongside these direct purchase cosmetics. However, with the way that loot crates have become more and more stigmatised by some gamers, it seems like Epic Games are trying to move away from them. These crates were earnable in-game, but were also purchasable and items obtained could be sold or traded on the Steam market.

Psyonix has been responding to some comments in the Rocket League subreddit regarding the announcement. Fortnite has made changes to the V-Buck Llamas, allowing them to show their contents before you purchase.

AT&T employees bribed to hack the system: DOJ
Some early AT&T recruits were paid to identify other employees who could be bribed and persuaded to join the scheme. DOJ says the scheme cost the company millions and resulted in millions of phones being removed from AT&T service.

Loot boxes, which contain a bundle of virtual items players can buy in exchange for real-world currency, have caused some controversy recently due to their comparisons to online gambling.

In their place, the studio plans to introduce a more transparent system showing players what they're buying in advance.

China has some of the strictest anti-loot box laws in the world, requiring developers to publish exact percentage chances of getting specific items from boxes and forcing developers to increase the odds of getting rarer items the longer they go without getting them.

What's particularly worrying about this issue is that games like Fortnite and Rocket League are aimed at younger audiences. I won't be holding my breath, though.
