Widespread Manhattan Power Outage Causes Broadway Cancellations and Delays

Billboards in Times Square went down after a power outage in Manhattan on Saturday. Con Ed said more than 40,000 customers were without power in New York

'From what we're seeing at this moment, this is simply a mechanical problem and one, again, that sounds like it is addressable in a reasonable period of time, ' de Blasio said.

Power went out early Saturday evening at much of Rockefeller Center and reached the Upper West Side, according to the ConEd Outage Map.

The Office of Emergency Management told PIX11 News that FDNY, NYPD, and OEM are responding to the area.

Officials with Con Edison later tweeted that they were working to restore electricity to customers and businesses primarily on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Radio City Music Hall's facade was dark as well.

A transformer fire caused a large-scale power outage in parts of New York City Saturday evening, knocking out traffic lights, stalling elevators and limiting subway service.

Con Ed has reported that over 44k customers are without power in Midtown Manhattan.

A Jennifer Lopez concert at Madison Square Garden was halted and disappointed fans had to be evacuated.

Amazon Music Growth Outpaces Spotify, Apple Music
In the words of the Amazon Executive, "For the industry to reach its full potential, we can't just look at 15 to 22-year-olds". Accordingly, per the Midia data, 14% of Amazon Music users are actually older than 55, so there's that.

On Broadway, theatergoers piled into the street after shows were canceled because of the outages.

The blackout seems to extend as far north as 72nd Street, according to Con Edison. Power was not restored until the next day.

"Members are responding to reports of numerous stuck elevators that are occupied, but there are now no patients reported", the department said on Twitter.

All trains have made it to stations, New York Police Department spokesman George Tsourovakas said. The Nos. 1, 2, and 3 trains are all running on the local track in Manhattan.

"Here's how we're on TV for NBC Nightly News from 30 Rock in the midst of a blackout in parts of midtown Manhattan". He said the A, C, F, D and M subway lines were affected.

The electricity cuts come on the anniversary of a massive power failure in 1977 that plunged the NY skyline into darkness and triggered widespread looting and arson.

The New York City Council speaker, Corey Johnson, said on Twitter that there had been a "major disturbance" at Con Edison's 49th Street substation, and that the utility was working to fix it.
