USA soldier killed 'in action' in Afghanistan

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad takes part in talks among Afghans in Qatar

A US servicemember was killed in action Saturday in Afghanistan, NATO's Resolute Support said in a statement.

Mujahed said two US service personnel were killed when Taliban militants attacked a tank in Sayed Abad district of central Wardak province, barely 40 miles south of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The Nangarhar attack came three days after Afghan forces killed several civilians, including a mother and her six children, during an air and ground raid in the northern Baghlan province on Tuesday.

Between January and March this year, air operations by Afghan and worldwide forces have caused at least 145 deaths, accounting for almost 25 percent of the total deaths during that period, UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in its quarterly report in April. The fatality reportedly has brought to 2,430 the number of US service members killed since the Afghan war started in October of 2001.

The ISIS affiliate is headquartered in eastern Afghanistan and is slowly expanding into the mountains of nearby Kunar and Nuristan provinces, also in eastern Afghanistan.

The U.S. top negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad described the recent discussions as "the most productive session to date".

Rahimi added that a number of civilians have also been affected in the attack.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks during the peace talks, including a July 1 assault in Kabul that claimed dozens of lives.
