Congress Delays Robert Mueller Hearings Amid Dispute Over Time For Questions

Mueller, who oversaw the federal investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election, is now scheduled to testify on July 24 before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees, the panels' chairmen said in a statement.

Lawmakers familiar with the matter told the news outlet that one reason for the delay was a negotiation about how much time they would have to question Mueller.

"We are pleased to announce that Special Counsel Mueller will provide additional public testimony when he appears before our committees", Congressmen Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said in a statement Friday.

By pushing the hearings back a week, for instance, they will now take place only two days before the House is scheduled to leave Washington for a six-week summer recess.

Mueller will appear before the House of Representatives for five hours to respond to the queries of the panel on his report on the Russian interference, an hour more than previously planned for the July 17 appearance. Around 80 Democrats have said they think an impeachment inquiry should be launched to bolster their efforts, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has so far rebuffed those calls.

The Mueller report said investigators found insufficient evidence to show a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation to influence the 2016 election and reached no conclusion about whether Trump obstructed justice - despite laying out episodes of the president apparently seeking to stymie the investigation.

However, lawmakers are banking on public testimony to reveal the contents of the report to Americans who have not read it. The former special counsel will testify for "an extended period of time" on that date, Nadler and Schiff said.

But that's like, morbid, you know? The show followed the couple as they apprehended people who avoided arrest warrants. You're out of your mind.' I said, 'Honey you might have to do chemo and stuff, ' " Dog recalled.

Democrats are expected to ask Mr Mueller about his conclusions, including that he could not exonerate Mr Trump on obstruction of justice after detailing several episodes in which Mr Trump tried to influence the investigation.

"They want to hurt the president for the election, because I see what I'm running against", Mr. Trump said before the hearing was rescheduled. He will then testify before the House intelligence committee in a separate hearing. The deputies will not be testifying behind closed doors when Mueller appears.

"Charging the president with a crime was not an option we could consider", he said at the time.

The one-week delay scrambles preparations across Washington for what's one of the most high-profile hearings in years. But Democrats want to know more about how he made that decision and when.

Neither Democratic nor Republican spokespeople for the committee immediately responded to Newsweek's request for comment. "A senior source said there was a "breakdown in negotiations" to have Mueller appear".

That means the committees may have to go through a lengthy court process to get more information.
