Amazon Music Growth Outpaces Spotify, Apple Music

Amazon Music Unlimited vs Apple Music

Amazon is famously cagey when it comes to releasing meaningful numbers for its music services, but a well-briefed report by the Financial Times this morning offers some new numbers. While it is possible to play music through rival services on Alexa, the default is Amazon Music.

Along those lines, Amazon's current subscriber base for its music service reportedly stands at 32 million, which is dwarfed by Apple Music's roughly 60 million and Spotify's more than 100 million.

Shortly after Amazon got Taylor Swift, SZA and Dua Lipa to perform in light of their annual Prime Day sale, the Financial Times is reporting the number of subscribers to Amazon Music Unlimited has grown 70 percent in the a year ago.

'Several dead' in Somalia hotel attack
Al-Shabab frequently carries out bombings in Mogadishu and other parts of Somalia against government, military and civilian targets.

However, Amazon has gained momentum in recent months, propelled by its ubiquity with consumers and Alexa, its popular intelligent assistant, which can play music through voice commands issued to its wireless Echo speaker. Only 5% of Spotify's users are in that category.

The deal is for new subscribers only, who will have to have an active student email address and to also verify their enrolment through UNiDAYS, a service that helps students save with dozens of brands. Accordingly, per the Midia data, 14% of Amazon Music users are actually older than 55, so there's that. That said, Amazon, of all companies, wants to increasingly be seen as a streaming music player and now has some fresh ammunition to tout in that regard. In the words of the Amazon Executive, "For the industry to reach its full potential, we can't just look at 15 to 22-year-olds".
