69-Year-Old Man Dies After Attacking Migrant Jail

Man shot and killed by police outside Tacoma ICE detention facility KCPQ-TV

Officers then located the man and determined he had been shot and was dead at the scene. But then he was able to kind of do it in a way that spoke to his political beliefs.

The attack on the migrant detention center followed by several hours, a rally by migrant supporters outside the facility operated for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement by GEO Group.

The police department said in a statement that officers responding to Saturday's incident "called out" to Van Spronsen and that "shots were fired" but did not elaborate. Van Spronsen wrapped his arms around the officer's neck and shoulders to free the 17-year-old being held.

Tacoma Police Department confirmed that all four officers opened fire on the suspect, while it remains unclear if he fired at the officers. The center has held parents who were separated from their children under President Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" policy, according to the Associated Press. She said she didn't know if the man fired at the officers.

The jail has been a hub of controversy, with protests held there nearly every day and some immigrants going on hunger strike to shed light on their cases.

Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool told The Post on Saturday that police did not have any information to share on Van Spronsen's motives in the attack. She and others got letters from Van Spronsen "saying goodbye", she said.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office reported that Van Spronsen had gunshot wounds, according to the Times.

Bartley said Van Spronsen left a "manifesto" that she did not share details of but thinks will be used by authorities.

Activist group La Resistencia - also known as NWDC Resistance, after Northwest Detention Center - had initially planned a protest of the facility for Saturday afternoon, but postponed the event by a day after reporting road closures around the center and a 24-hour lock-down of the facility itself.

Four police officers were said to have opened fire at the man, who was later found dead.

Authorities say investigators are processing the scene and police are continuing to investigate.

"The outrageous and baseless accusations that have been leveled against our facilities have led to misplaced aggression and a risky environment for our employees, whose safety is our top priority", a spokesperson for The GEO Group said in a statement emailed to Reuters. We are thankful for the quick and fearless action by the Tacoma Police Department, which prevented innocent lives from being endangered'.

Last year, a federal judge ruled that Washington state could pursue its lawsuit seeking to force GEO Group to pay minimum wage for work done by detainees at the detention center.

In November, a 40-year-old immigrant from a Siberian province in Russian Federation died after an ongoing hunger strike.
