Raids targeting undocumented immigrants set to begin within days

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, officers look to arrest an undocumented immigrant during an operation in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn

Moore says while the Grand Rapids region specifically, is not a target, ICE agents already have a presence in the area. While the president's announcement may have made the headlines he intended, with his supporters going on cable television to praise his crackdown and coverage of the ensuing panic in immigrant communities leading the news, former officials told TIME it's likely to impede ICE's arrests and that broadcasting the timeline could endanger ICE agents.

"If ICE agents don't have a warrant signed by a judge, a person may refuse to open the door and let them in".

Asked by the media if the administration had given warning of the raid, President Trump said there was no need to do so.

"I've never seen anything like this, where they're highlighting an operation in advance", said John Sandweg, who headed ICE under President Barack Obama.

In the latest chapter of the country's immigration situation, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids are scheduled to start Sunday.

"He's been trying to do something for months", Yale-Loehr said. The number of migrants apprehended in June were still more than double the same time a year ago. The Times says the final details of the rapidly changing operation remain in flux.

While some might stay in hotel rooms because of space constraints until travel papers are arranged.

The agency has notified about 2,000 of those people that they face deportation because they failed to appear in court, acting ICE Director Mark Morgan said last month.

The scope of the enforcement will likely be far less ambitious than Trump first suggested in his June 17 tweet.

A Texas congressman accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of sedition for urging illegal aliens to resist the Trump administration's plan to enforce existing deportation orders. "This brutal action will terrorize children and tear families apart", Pelosi said during her weekly news conference.

"As always, ICE prioritizes the arrest and removal of unlawfully present aliens who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security", said ICE spokesperson Alathea Smock in a statement Thursday.

"He has used our vulnerable immigrants and refugees who are fearing for their very livelihoods and their families to distract us", Hancock said.

All the attention on Sunday will be focused on Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities ahead of a mass deportation operation. "We are making every effort to protect the due process rights of these individuals and ICE has the duty to do the same".

Those who will be targeted "crossed the border recently" and many were "given notice to report to an ICE office and leave the United States" in February, the homeland security officials told the Times.

"If the United States government is willing to do something like we just heard, send DHS agents to the home of a former employee of theirs who refused to lie and intimidate him while one of the mainstream networks is there interviewing him, can we begin to imagine what is going on when agents show up unannounced to the homes of low-wage, undocumented worker families?"
