Payments at retailers, including Woolworths, hit by Telstra outage; ATMs, EFTPOS affected

In a message to Gizmodo Australia a Telstra spokesperson said, "We are now investigating an issue affecting services, including EFTPOS and access to ATMS, for a number of enterprise customers nationally".

Westpac Banking Corporation said on Twitter that some automatic teller machines in Sydney were down, while National Australia Bank Ltd and Commonwealth Bank of Australia also reported payment processing issues. "We'll keep you updated as we know more".

The nation's big four banks and major supermarkets were among those caught out in the failure, which affected some EFTPOS terminals and access to ATMs across the country.

"Some services are returning to normal and we thank customers for their patience".

"Good news. Many of our services are starting to restore".

Westpac said some branches, ATMs and services in Sydney were non-operational due to a broader network failure in the region. However, it only appears to be affecting low-value transactions. The outage then cascaded into a higher number of calls than usual into its call centre.

At 4pm, Commonwealth bank updated customers about an "issue with one of our telecommunication providers" which is "affecting some of our services". The cause of the problem is under urgent investigation.
