British Ambassador To U.S. Resigns After Trump Ignores Him

"The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like", Darroch reportedly wrote to the UK Foreign Office.

While May gave her full backing to Darroch, her potential replacement as prime minister, Borish Johnson, declined to explicitly support the diplomat and instead emphasized the need for maintaining good ties with Washington.

In response to Darroch's resignation Wednesday, Guardian columnist Owen Jones tweeted: "We're on course to become the 51st state of Donald Trump's U.S., with Boris Johnson as his consul".

"I wouldn't use the language President Trump used, and I wouldn't agree with it", he said.

Leaked diplomatic cables published Sunday, July 7,2 019, in a British newspaper reveal that Britain's ambassador to the United States described President Donald Trump's administration as "clumsy and inept" while grappling with global problems.

The row has been described as the worst dispute between the transatlantic allies in more than 100 years and it highlights the complexities countries face in dealing with the volatile temper of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking on Newsnight on Tuesday night, Mr Raab criticised Sir Kim's remarks about the Trump administration, and said that when he read and drafted diplomatic cables he would "try to avoid personalised stuff".

Expectedly, Farage, who had helped Trump in the 2016 US Presidential elections, was quick to call for the sacking of the British envoy hours after the leaked cables. One theory says Sir Kim's memos were deliberately leaked in order to allow the new Prime Minister to move a Brexiteer in his place.

United Kingdom seizure of Iranian tanker not to be left unanswered: senior cmdr
Allies would patrol waters near those USA command ships and escort commercial vessels with their nation's flags. Emmanuel Bonne, a French presidential envoy, is in Iran this week for talks aimed at resolving the crisis.

The U.K. government has stood behind Darroch amid the diplomatic firestorm whipped up after the leak. "We will pursue the culprit with all the means at our disposal", Foreign Office chief Simon McDonald told a committee of lawmakers, adding that police were involved in the investigation. "This is exactly what ambassadors do all the time".

The memos Darroch wrote about the Trump administration were meant for a limited audience.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the leader of the separatist Scottish National Party, said Darroch had been "forced out" for doing his job. The fracas not only highlighted Trump's now well-established hypersensitivity to any kind of criticism - even in what is widely seen in the diplomatic community as boilerplate reports that ambassadors send home - but also underscored Trump's public intervention in British politics and the British right-wing Brexiteers embrace of Trump.

Darroch's grand residence in northwest Washington became a go-to gathering spot for Trump administration officials.

It underscored that the close relationship between the two countries has become increasingly lopsided - a severe problem as the United Kingdom prepares to set a new path with its departure from the European Union. He said that Boris had "thrown our top diplomat under a bus".

According to The New York Times, Darroch - who, among other taunts, said Trump "radiates insecurity" and could "crash and burn" - is evidently not alone among diplomats in communicating similar sentiments to their governments. The professionalism and integrity of the British civil service is the envy of the world.

The last time there was a problem with an envoy to Washington was in 1856, he said.
